Portable air conditioner makes a noise after it drains- what could it be?
March 5th, 2010I have a portable air conditioner that will make a noise after it drains. The best way to describe the noise is like a choo choo (not as loud obviously). I am not sure what it could be it is properly vented and if drains it’s water. Any suggestions?
How to fix lights dimming when portable air conditioner turns on?
March 4th, 2010I have a 8,000 BTU portable air conditioner, and when the compressor turns on all the lights dim.
I looked in the circuit breaker and its on a 15a fuse, which for some reason is wired into the kitchen lights/fans, as well as one of the bedrooms lights/outlets and half the outlets in a second bedroom.
lots of computers, tv’s, and other equipment are plugged into these outlets so it would be difficult to get the air conditioner on its own circuit.
Is there anything else I can do?

Do you know a good portable air conditioner?
February 28th, 2010I am looking for a portable air conditioner. But one that actually works and really cools down my room. I have come across some really bad ones and it was not always correlated to the price. So if possible I do not want it to cost too much. I also do not know what BTU stands for.
How to soundproof a portable air conditioner?
February 28th, 2010I have a portable air conditioner, one of those air conds that are on wheels and look like R2D2. The problem is its quite noisy. It may sound crazy but as a last ditch effort I’m considering building an egg carton box around it but getting the dimensions right ie lining up the air vent is the big challenge. Can anyone suggest how this could be done? I’ve also looked at sound proof foam but have heard repeatably that egg cartons are the best.
Has anyone used a portable air conditioner?
February 28th, 2010I just moved into an apartment without a/c and I’m thinking of buying a portable air conditioner. I was wondering if anyone whose used it could tell me how they liked it compared to a regular (window or central) a/c. Also, what should I pay attention to when buying one?

using portable air conditioner as a fan?
February 26th, 2010hi, I recently bought a portable Haier air conditioner. It’s 7000 btu and operates at 800W. I also like to double up the air conditioner as a fan when it’s not so hot but would like to know if I will still be using as much power. If the machine is only running as a fan with no cooling turned on, will it use (significantly?) less wattage and therefore less electricity? Does anyone know how the power consumption is compared to a conventional fan? Thanks.
Why add water to a portable air conditioner?
February 26th, 2010Why do you have to add water to a portable air conditioner? My instruction manual says about 1.5 quarts, but it doesn’t say why, or if you ever have to add more. Does it disappear? Do you have to fill it up regularly?
One thing also it says you have to empty water from the bottom as it accumulates – I live in a very dry climate and have never once had to empty the water in the past 2 months. Is this normal?
The unit works ok, it cools fine, but it’s not that great. Do I need to add more water regularly?

February 24th, 2010How do I properly vent a portable air conditioner in the attic?
February 23rd, 2010Hi there:
I have a small work room up in attic that is insulated, wired, and completely sealed from the rest of my attic. I bought a portable air conditioner. There are no windows. Should I exhaust the a/c into the rest of the attic or vent it through the roof? Also, what should I use for an intake to bring in fresh air from the outside….just a second vent with a good screen and a fan to draw air in? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have any knowledge about portable air conditioners?
February 18th, 2010I am thinking about purchasing two portable air conditioners. My condominium is 960 square feet, so each level is about 415 square foot. This is minus the stair case. I would like one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. I would like to eventually do away with central a/c. I live in Mesa, Az. where temperatures in the summer can reach 112 and higher. Does anyone have any experience with portable a/c’s? The cost, the reliability, any information will help. Also, as far as the operating cost on the electric bill. Central air is very expensive and can run over 0/mos if not more in Az.
Do I have to disconnect the portable air conditioners from the window when it rains? Or when not in use?
February 17th, 2010We have always had either central air, the old window air conditioners, or no air conditioning. This is the first time we’ve had portable air conditioners.
So, maybe someone who also has a portable air conditioner, or knows someone with one, could help me with this…
We have two actually, one from Sharp, the other from Royal Sovereign, both (especially the Sharp) are a pain to remove (to disconnect the hot air tube from the window)
The Sharp has a "bug guard" screen I guess, but because bars on the windows, we couldn’t install the Sharp "rain guards"
The Royal Sovereign has none of these features.
Would bugs getting in the tube or rainwater be a problem? How to fix such problem if occurred?
Or should I just keep connecting and disconnecting? (The Sharp connection is just so darn flimsy tho, It feels like if I do this too often it might not last or break)
Any suggestions?
